On November 18, over 400 Griffin-Spalding County School System (GSCS) Student Athletes attended the seasonal Beyond Self Athletes Assembly, an event dedicated to empowering the next generation of leaders. Students heard an inspiring keynote address from U.S. Army Veteran and Olympic Gold Medalist Melvin Pender. Also, during the assembly, through a partnership with AT&T and Beyond Self, 50 new laptops were given out to deserving student-athletes from the fall sports season, providing critical technology access to families in the community.
Some student athletes who received a new laptop were nominated by their coach for demonstrating the three R’s: Respect yourself, Respect others and take Responsibility. Others received a laptop for completing the captain’s workshop and serving as Key People of Influence for the winter season. Then, a lucky few were chosen after answering questions correctly about the program and the keynote speaker.
The guest of honor, Melvin Pender, delivered a remarkable story of perseverance and excellence. Pender is a decorated Vietnam War veteran who earned a Bronze Star for his service in the U.S. Army. He is also a celebrated Olympian, having won a gold medal as part of the world-record-setting 4x100m relay team at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. His journey from a segregated childhood in Georgia to the world stage as both a soldier and an athlete embodies the very spirit of overcoming adversity that the assembly aims to instill in young people. Pender reiterated to GSCS student athletes the importance of listening, emphasizing that the only way you can learn is to listen.
One Flesh Mentoring and Coaching Inc. Chairman David Johnson stated, "We are incredibly honored to have a true American hero like Melvin Pender share his life experiences with our athletes. His story is a powerful testament to what can be achieved through discipline, hope and a commitment to go beyond oneself. This event is not just about sports; it's about building character, fostering community and providing tangible resources, like the laptops from our generous partners at AT&T, to help our youth succeed in all areas of life."
GSCS Athletics Director Bill Stikes stated, “GSCS is developing leaders for today and the future through our athletic programs. Our athletes benefit greatly through our partnership with One Flesh Mentoring and Coaching Inc.”
